History

Establishment and Early Years

The issue of higher technical education in Bulgaria arose with the 1882 bequest of Evlogi Georgiev — a merchant, industrialist, and banker in Bucharest — of 6 million gold levs, the income from which was to be used to found and maintain a higher school.

The University was founded in 1942 as the Higher Technical School (HTS), which later, in 1945, became the State Polytechnic.

In 1953, it was established as a separate Civil Engineering Institute (CEI), which in 1963 was renamed the Higher Institute of Civil Engineering (HICE), and in 1977 — the Higher Institute of Architecture and Civil Engineering (HIAC).

In 1990, HIAC was renamed the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy (UACEG) by a decision of the General Assembly, and on July 21, 1995, it was officially transformed into a University by a decision of the National Assembly. On November 15, 2001, it received institutional accreditation.
